Jesse Tree 2026: a verse for every day of Advent

A Jesse Tree verse for each of the 26 days of Advent 2026, from Sunday, November 29 to Thursday, December 24: the prophecy of the root of Jesse (Isaias 11:1–10), then the family line of Jesus from Abraham to Joseph (Matthew 1:1–16). Read the day's verse, hang an ornament, and arrive at Christmas Eve with “Jesus, who is called Christ.”

About the lists. There is no single official Jesse Tree list; published schedules vary, and families pick their own ornaments (see Catholic Culture's Jesse Tree overview and WhyChristmas). This page uses Scripture alone. The last column only lists words printed in that day's verse, for anyone who wants to draw or make that day's ornament.

Jesse Tree questions

What is a Jesse Tree?

An Advent custom: a small tree, branch or poster on which a family hangs one ornament a day, tracing the family line of Jesus through the Old Testament to Christmas. Its name comes from Isaias 11:1, the first verse on this page: “there shall come forth a rod out of the root of Jesse.”

Who was Jesse?

The father of King David. Saint Matthew's genealogy names him in the verse for December 14: “And Jesse begot David the king.”

Which list of Jesse Tree ornaments is the right one?

There is no single official list. Published Jesse Tree schedules differ in their stories, symbols and number of days, and families choose their own ornaments. This page follows Scripture itself: the prophecy of the root of Jesse in Isaias 11, then the genealogy of Christ in Matthew 1, one verse a day.

Which Bible translation is this?

The Douay-Rheims Bible as revised by Bishop Richard Challoner (1749–1752), the traditional Catholic English translation from the Latin Vulgate. It is in the public domain, so you may print it.

When should we start the Jesse Tree in 2026?

On the First Sunday of Advent, Sunday, November 29, 2026. The 26 verses here end on Christmas Eve, Thursday, December 24, with “Jesus, who is called Christ.”
