The Joyful Mysteries

The Joyful Mysteries follow the hidden years: the Incarnation, Christ's birth and childhood, seen through Mary's eyes. Each mystery below has its Scripture, quoted in full, and the virtue traditionally asked for while praying it.

  1. The Annunciation · fruit: humility
Luke 1:38 (WEB)Mary said, “Behold, the servant of the Lord; let it be done to me according to your word.” Then the angel departed from her.

Mary's yes opens the door to the Incarnation. Where is God asking for your yes?

  2. The Visitation · fruit: love of neighbor
Luke 1:42 (WEB)She called out with a loud voice and said, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb!

Carrying Christ, Mary hurries to serve. Who needs your visit this week?

  3. The Nativity · fruit: poverty of spirit
Luke 2:7 (WEB)She gave birth to her firstborn son. She wrapped him in bands of cloth and laid him in a feeding trough, because there was no room for them in the inn.

God arrives with no room at the inn. Make room for him today.

  4. The Presentation in the Temple · fruit: obedience
Luke 2:22 (WEB)When the days of their purification according to the law of Moses were fulfilled, they brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord

Mary and Joseph keep the law and offer their Son. Offer God the ordinary duties of today.

  5. The Finding in the Temple · fruit: joy in finding Jesus
Luke 2:46 (WEB)After three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the middle of the teachers, both listening to them and asking them questions.

Three days of searching end in his Father's house. Seek him where he waits.
