The Sorrowful Mysteries

The Sorrowful Mysteries walk with Christ through his Passion, from Gethsemane to the Cross. Each mystery below has its Scripture, quoted in full, and the virtue traditionally asked for while praying it.

  1. The Agony in the Garden · fruit: sorrow for sin
Luke 22:42 (WEB)saying, “Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done.”

Not my will, but yours. Bring him the thing you would rather not surrender.

  2. The Scourging at the Pillar · fruit: purity
John 19:1 (WEB)So Pilate then took Jesus and flogged him.

He bears in his body what we have done. Thank him for it, plainly.

  3. The Crowning with Thorns · fruit: courage
Matthew 27:29 (WEB)They braided a crown of thorns and put it on his head, and a reed in his right hand; and they kneeled down before him and mocked him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!”

The King is mocked and stays silent. Bear one small humiliation without answering back.

  4. The Carrying of the Cross · fruit: patience
John 19:17 (WEB)He went out, bearing his cross, to the place called “The Place of a Skull”, which is called in Hebrew, “Golgotha”,

He carries the cross himself. Carry today's burden beside him.

  5. The Crucifixion · fruit: perseverance
Luke 23:46 (WEB)Jesus, crying with a loud voice, said, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit!” Having said this, he breathed his last.

Into your hands. Commend to the Father everyone you love, living and dead.
