The Luminous Mysteries

The Luminous Mysteries, added by Pope St John Paul II in 2002, light up Christ's public ministry, from his baptism to the Last Supper. Each mystery below has its Scripture, quoted in full, and the virtue traditionally asked for while praying it.

  1. The Baptism of the Lord · fruit: openness to the Holy Spirit
Matthew 3:17 (WEB)Behold, a voice out of the heavens said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”

This is my beloved Son. In your own baptism the Father said it of you.

  2. The Wedding at Cana · fruit: to Jesus through Mary
John 2:5 (WEB)His mother said to the servants, “Whatever he says to you, do it.”

Do whatever he tells you: Mary's last recorded words. What is he telling you?

  3. The Proclamation of the Kingdom · fruit: conversion
Mark 1:15 (WEB)and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and God’s Kingdom is at hand! Repent, and believe in the Good News.”

Repent and believe. Name one thing to turn from, and one to turn toward.

  4. The Transfiguration · fruit: desire for holiness
Matthew 17:2 (WEB)He was changed before them. His face shone like the sun, and his garments became as white as the light.

The disciples glimpse his glory before the Cross. Remember a time God felt near.

  5. The Institution of the Eucharist · fruit: adoration
Luke 22:19 (WEB)He took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body which is given for you. Do this in memory of me.”

This is my body, given for you. Make a spiritual communion now.
