Novena to the Holy Spirit

Nine days of prayer to the Holy Spirit. Pray the daily prayer every day, then the day's own prayer, and close each day with the closing prayer.

The daily prayer (every day)

Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful, and kindle in them the fire of your love. Send forth your Spirit, O Lord, and they shall be created, and you shall renew the face of the earth. Let us pray. O God, who has taught the hearts of the faithful by the light of the Holy Spirit, grant us in the same Spirit to be truly wise, and ever to rejoice in his consolation, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

The nine days

Day 1

On the love of God. Holy Spirit, fill us with the love of God so completely that we love him with our whole heart, and our neighbor as ourselves.

Day 2

On the fear of the Lord. Holy Spirit, give us reverent awe before God, and a horror of all that offends him.

Day 3

On piety. Holy Spirit, plant in us a tender devotion to God as our Father, making prayer a delight and worship a homecoming.

Day 4

On fortitude. Holy Spirit, strengthen us in temptation; let us bear the cross with patience and stand firm in the faith.

Day 5

On knowledge. Holy Spirit, teach us to see all created things in the light of God, that we may love what he loves.

Day 6

On understanding. Holy Spirit, open the truths of faith to us not just as ideas, but as the very heartbeat of God.

Day 7

On counsel. Holy Spirit, guide our decisions; let us choose what pleases God, even when it is difficult.

Day 8

On wisdom. Holy Spirit, give us your wisdom — the gift that lets us taste and see the goodness of the Lord.

Day 9

On the fruits of the Spirit. Holy Spirit, ripen in us your fruits: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness, self-control.

Closing prayer (every day)

Lord Jesus Christ, who before ascending into heaven promised to send the Holy Spirit to finish your work in the souls of your apostles and disciples, deign to grant the same Holy Spirit to me, that he may perfect in my soul the work of your grace and your love. Amen.
